12-year-old Darius Brown believes that no dream is too small even for a kid like him. And his mission is to help shelter animals get adopted by dressing them up in cute bow ties. Today, Darius is the CEO of his own tie company which helps numerous homeless animals get adopted to forever homes.

The start of Darius’ bow ties

Darius struggled with comprehensive, motor, and speech delays when he was two years old. At age eight, he started helping his big sister making bow ties by hand as a hobby. Later on, Darius and his sister realized that bow tie-making helped him improve his fine motor skills. He continued making more bow and bow ties for fun, and even dressed up their family dog in his finished products.

A few years ago, Darius heard that lots of pets were displaced from their homes during the onslaught of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. These animals were taken into various shelters and adoption centers. But because there weren’t enough adopters and foster parents, the homeless dogs and cats might face euthanasia sooner or later.

Darius’ heart reached out to the sad plight of these pets. That’s when he decided to make lots of bow ties, but this time for a greater cause. He brings his creative products to shelters and animal centers, and then let the dogs and cats wear them. Now that the shelter animals look cuter and dashing, he hopes that the dogs and cats would look more adoptable. And indeed, what transformation his bow ties made!

A growing advocacy for shelter animals

Darius launched Beaux and Paws, his very own business venture where he is also the CEO. He started receiving countless donations of fabric for him to make ties out of, and some money to finance his venture. Businesses, organizations and private individuals caught wind of Darius’ advocacy for shelter animals that his efforts started to gain recognition. Even the former president Barack Obama wrote a letter to recognize Darius’ efforts.

Importantly, Darius’ campaign has helped several shelter dogs and cats get adopted in their forever homes. Indeed, these pets look more adorable in their creative bow ties; it’s hard not to fall for their charms.

Darius proves that even a young kid like him could make a difference to the world, and he’s doing it one bow tie at a time. Way to go, Darius! You’re totally paw-some!
